I deleted the picture I had uploaded, but then realised it had vanished from the post I had uploaded it for.

It's a limitation of both the forum software and apple here;

basically you get an allocated space on our server to upload pictures too. Each picture must have a unique filename otherwise you'll get the error 'file already exists'.

When you insert a picture into a post it links directly to the file in your space. If you delete that file it will delete from the post you have made.

Unfortunately as far as I can tell Apple don't have any built in facility to rename files. 3rd party apps might let you though - but this is untested.

Dan, thanks for the info.

Looks like I need to go 'old school' and upload pics from my PC!

just goes to prove my theory that iPads (other makes are available) are just PDA's (personal digital assistants). They are not computers. Otherwise they would be no so called PC's or Macintoshes (Macs). YGWYPF

Apple have made them easy to use but in doing so have removed 'advanced' features such as renaming files!

I don't think this will ever be resolved. A better way would be the forum randomly naming files as it uploads them, that way there will never be two the same name.

I guess what you could do is create a Flickr account, upload your pictures there and follow these steps:

Click on the 'Download' button (bottom right of the pic)
Select 'All sizes'
Pick the size of photo you want
Right click the photo and click 'copy image location' or properties in IE
Then copy/pasta the URL into an image tag

With that code once you have changed the curly brackets to square ones, you should get a photo:
